What is an Apicoectomy?
Apicoectomies are typically recommended when an infection or inflammation has progressed, even following root canal treatment or retreatment. If the root canal systems aren’t entirely sealed and there are hidden or accessory canals that still have bacteria in them, the infection can persist and an apicoectomy may be needed. This involves removing the tip of the affected tooth’s root and sealing it off to prevent it from becoming reinfected. The treatment is often referred to as “endodontic microsurgery.”
The Apicoectomy Treatment Process
In order to access the tip of the root, Dr. Segal will need to create a small incision in the gumline. Once accessed, she will remove the tip of the infected root as well as the damaged tissue surrounding it. The area will be thoroughly cleaned and sealed using a high-powered microscope that allows for precision, higher treatment success rates, and a faster healing process. Typically, it can be completed within about 30 to 90 minutes.
What Happens After My Apicoectomy?
After your procedure, it typically takes between 10 and 14 days to make a complete recovery. However, you should be able to return to work within a day or two following your treatment. In the first 24 hours, you’ll want to apply ice to the outside of your face and take any prescribed medications. This will help minimize any swelling, bruising, or soreness. As the days pass, you should notice your pain gradually subside until you feel 100 percent again!
